The best way to make a glass jar airtight is to pair it with a compatible, airtight lid or by adding a pressure sensitive liner. When an airtight glass jar is properly sealed, it can be incredibly odor proof. However, some plastic jars are not as effective at blocking scents. Always remember that anything that comes in contact with the exterior of the container can leave an odor residue unless thoroughly cleaned.

Many airtight glass jars utilize “push down and turn” caps, which were also designed to be child resistant, very similar to a prescription bottle. Press down on the lid with the palm of your hand, then grasp and twist - it should pop right off. There are other airtight glass jar caps, such as wooden lids with suction seals. Those are a bit easier to open and not child resistant; simply pry from the underside of the cap until it pops up and off!

Glass jars are not intended for the initial drying process, however, you can cure regulated products in a glass jar. Once your product is dried and no longer externally moist, it can be transferred to an airtight glass jar to cure. This process typically takes 2 to 8 weeks, during which it should be kept in a cool, dry, dark space (think closets – not attics or basements). The curing process does emit some gasses within the jar. It’s important to remember to release the pressure by opening the container once a day for a few moments before resealing tightly.
