DON’T OVERPACK: Place exactly as much weed that fits in the bowl without having to stuff, jam, or press it down. The looser the bowl pack, the smoother your airflow, the tighter the glass smoking bowl, the harder you have to pull

Give the bowl a VERY light tap/press to level out of the weed sitting inside it

• Light the bowl pipe

Use a lighter or hemp wick (best for taste) to light up your bowl pipe

Hold the flame about a half-inch above the weed, and avoid letting the flame directly touch and burn the weed

As you inhale and keep the flame held over the glass smoking bowl, the heat from the fire will ignite the bowl and begin forming smoke

• Take the hit

How Are Weed Bowls Made?

Craftsmen make the majority of weed bowls through the process of glass blowing. And while glass can be crafted into a variety of different pipes, from spoon pipes and chillums to water pipes and bubblers, we’ll just be covering the main process.

To make a smoking bowl, glass blowers start by heating up a glass tube with a high-temp torch. As the glass heats up, it becomes malleable, and the craftsmen can then safely break, bend, or shape it. But for a traditional glass pipe, the glassblower typically starts with a process called the “neck stretch”. Here, the artisan heats up the cylinder to stretch it out and create what will later be the main chamber/neck of the pipes where the smoke travels.

Once the glassblowers are satisfied with the length and shape of the pipe, they’ll move on to creating the bowl. To do this, the craftsmen heat the end of the neck while blowing into the cool end of the tube. This causes the end of the tube to expand into a rounded bowl shape, step 1. Throughout the process, the glassblower continues spinning and heating the pipe to maintain its shape and form.

At this point, there are only a few steps left. Next, the glassblower heats the bulb and presses a small rod into the top center, creating the indent/basin where you pack your weed. After that, they take a small tool and press it into the pipes to create the hole at the bottom of the bowl, the carb, and the opening for the mouthpiece.

From here, the process is pretty much done. The glassblower does a few finishing touches to perfect the shape of the bowl, and applies the much-needed “press down” to give the bowl a flat bottom that prevents rolling.
